About Elevatus Training

Sexuality Education and Healthy Relationship Training for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD)

Elevatus Training helps people teach and discuss healthy relationships and sexuality with greater confidence, clarity, and inclusion. We create sexuality education curriculum, communication supports, training, and self-study courses for professionals, educators, direct support staff, parents, self-advocates, and organizations serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and autism.

Our work is grounded in a simple idea: people with I/DD – and those who support them – deserve access to sexuality education that is medically accurate, age-appropriate, inclusive, and practical. We strive to craft tools and resources that are evidence-informed, trauma-informed, easy to use, adaptable, and designed for real-world settings.

What is Elevatus Training’s Mission?

Our mission, in short, is to help more people become confident sexuality educators.

We support schools, agencies, families, and self-advocates with the tools they need to teach, communicate, and lead conversations about healthy relationships and sexuality. Instead of relying only on outside experts, we help teams build the knowledge and confidence to do this work on their own.

That means creating resources that are:

  • Inclusive of all genders and sexual identities
  • Focused on sexual self-advocacy
  • Useful for classrooms, agencies, families, and training programs
  • Flexible enough for different learning styles and support needs

Who Founded Elevatus Training?

Elevatus Training was founded by Katherine McLaughlin, M.Ed., an AASECT Certified Sexuality Educator with over 30 years of experience in sexuality education and support for individuals with disabilities. and disability support.

Katherine is the CEO and lead trainer at Elevatus Training. She delivers live and online trainings, authors curriculum, and develops educational materials for teaching and communication.

Headshot of Katherine McLaughlin

Her work began in reproductive rights and public health, including many years at Planned Parenthood. Over time, her focus expanded into sexuality education for people with I/DD. That shift was shaped in part by her own life experience after becoming a wheelchair user following a spinal cord injury at age 26.

That personal experience helped deepen her understanding of the inequity many people with disabilities face — including the harmful belief that people with disabilities are not sexual. Her career has since focused on changing that narrative through education, advocacy, and practical support.
